According to reports, the Indian government is expected to accept a top representative of the Taliban in New Delhi soon. This is a big step from India to improve relations with Kabul and counter the growing influence of China in Afghanistan, the official of the Taliban-led government.

Officials familiar with the matter said the Taliban-led government has identified two potential candidates to take control of the Afghan embassy in New Delhi. Sources requested anonymity as the discussions are private. They said the Taliban official will not be recognized as a diplomat by India. But he will be the top representative for the government there. They said the Taliban embassy will not be able to hoist its flag at Indian events or on official vehicles.

Some countries, including China, Pakistan and Russia, have accepted Taliban diplomats. The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021. India-Afghanistan relations had become inactive since the Taliban seized power in Kabul in August 2021. The Taliban are internationally condemned for human rights violations. India, like many other countries, had severed diplomatic ties with Afghanistan at that time. It closed its embassy in Kabul. It also limited contact with India.

According to the report, the Taliban has reportedly handed over a new list of proposed diplomats to Indian officials. It also includes the name of Najib Shaheen, son of Suhail Shaheen, the Taliban representative in Doha. According to sources, the latest round of talks began after the Taliban's acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met in the United Arab Emirates on January 8. After the meeting, the Taliban again submitted its list of diplomatic candidates to New Delhi. The Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi is currently closed.
