Chamoli Glacier Burst: Major accident in Chamoli, Uttarakhand! 57 workers buried due to glacier burst, 16 rescued

Chamoli News: There is panic due to the breaking of the glacier in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. 57 workers living in Mana near Badrinath in Chamoli district were buried under the snow due to the breaking of the glacier on Thursday (28 February). This sad news has come amid the ongoing snowfall in the high altitude areas of Uttarakhand. Out of the 57 workers buried near Mana village in Badrinath Dham, 16 workers have been rescued. While the search for the remaining 41 workers is going on.

Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Radha Raturi said that 57 workers were buried under the glacier when it broke in Mana near Badrinath in Chamoli district. 16 of them have been rescued. Efforts are on to save the remaining workers. Raturi said that the glacier fell on the roadside huts of the workers engaged in road construction work in Mana.

He said that as soon as the information was received, employees of police, army, Border Roads Organisation and Disaster Management Department reached the spot. Then rescue and relief work started. The secretary said that due to bad weather and continuous snow fall, rescue work is facing difficulties.

There has been heavy snowfall in the upper regions of Chamoli for several days. This accident happened near the highway, three kilometers away from the Badrinath temple. 57 workers are reported to be buried in it, out of which 16 have been rescued. It is being told that the BRO camp has also been damaged in this accident.

According to the report, the glacier broke on Friday morning. After receiving information about the incident, Army and ITBP teams have been sent to the spot. All the workers were working for BRO (Border Roads Organisation).

The BRO team engaged in road work and the 9th Brigade of the Indian Army are engaged in the rescue operation. Along with this, ITBP teams are also engaged in the rescue operation. SDRF teams have been dispatched to the spot from the helipad of Joshimath.

NDTV's report claims that all of them are workers of a company engaged in highway widening work in a 50 km area near Mana village. The BRO is getting the road work done through an EPC company.

High alert in Chamoli

It has been raining continuously in Chamoli for the last two days. The District Magistrate has asked all the officers and departments to remain alert. An orange alert has been issued for heavy rain and snowfall in Chamoli and Rudraprayag of Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has prayed for the safety of all the workers trapped under the snow due to the glacier burst near Badrinath Dham.

CM wrote on X, "Received the sad news of many workers being buried due to avalanche during the construction work being conducted by BRO near Mana village in Chamoli district. Relief and rescue work is being conducted by ITBP, BRO and other rescue teams. I pray to Lord Badri Vishal for the safety of all the labour brothers."
