Tahawwur Rana Extradition: From Vijay Mallya to Goldie Brar… after Tahawwur Rana, now preparations are on to bring these high-profile fugitives to India

Tahawwur Rana Extradition: After the successful extradition of terrorist Tahawwur Hussain Rana involved in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, preparations are now underway to bring back to India those high-profile criminals who are currently sitting in other countries. These include fugitive businessmen Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi, as well as gangsters and separatists like Goldie Brar and Arsh Dalla. According to the latest information available based on the 2024 records of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India has made a total of 178 requests to various countries for the extradition of fugitives, including persons involved in terrorist activities in the country, since January 1, 2019.

64-year-old Rana's last attempt to avoid extradition failed after the US Supreme Court rejected his application. He has now been brought to India. On December 10, 2024, the Ministry of External Affairs said that a total of 23 persons have been successfully extradited since January 1, 2019. The MEA said that the central government is making diplomatic efforts for the extradition of fugitive criminals. To date, India has signed extradition treaties with 48 countries.

Waiting for these high-profile extraditions

Goldie Brar: Lawrence Bishnoi gang's main gangster Goldie Brar currently lives in Canada. He is wanted in several serious crimes including the murder of late singer Sidhu Moosewala. In June 2022, the Center had issued a 'Red Notice' against him. This means that he can be arrested from any country. Also, he can be extradited from countries which are members of Interpol.

Arsh Dalla: Khalistani terrorist Arshdeep Singh Gill alias Arsh Dalla is a prominent terrorist of the banned organization Khalistan Tiger Force. He lives in Canada. He is wanted in India in more than 50 cases of murder, attempted murder, extortion and terrorist acts. He was declared a "terrorist" in January 2004. He was arrested in October 2024 in connection with a shootout incident. He was then charged with 11 serious charges, including illegal possession of weapons and tampering with evidence.

Anmol Bishnoi: Anmol Bishnoi, the younger brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, is wanted in India in several high-profile cases including the murders of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala and popular Mumbai leader Baba Siddiqui. He was arrested in the US in November last year for entering the country without valid documents. He is also an accused in the firing case at actor Salman Khan's house.

Vijay Mallya: Vijay Mallya, who was declared a fugitive in 2019, faces loan default cases of over Rs 9,000 crore. He left India in 2016. He is currently chilling in the UK. On Wednesday (April 9), a consortium of Indian banks led by the State Bank of India won their court appeal in London to uphold the bankruptcy order against him. The 69-year-old businessman was declared bankrupt in July 2021. He is currently out on bail in the UK.

Nirav Modi: Nirav Modi has been in a London jail for nearly six years after losing an extradition battle to face fraud and money laundering charges in India. Three sets of criminal proceedings are ongoing against him in India. He was arrested on an extradition warrant on March 19, 2019. The then British Home Secretary Priti Patel ordered his extradition in April 2021. He has since exhausted his legal appeals in the case, up to the Supreme Court. He has filed multiple bail applications, many of which have been rejected.

Mehul Choksi: The fugitive businessman is reportedly living in Belgium with his wife Priti Choksi. He is a Belgian citizen. He has acquired an 'F residency card'. Indian authorities have requested the Belgian government for his extradition, but his newly acquired residency in the country has complicated the matter. He is wanted in connection with the infamous PNB fraud case, in which he and his nephew Nirav Modi were involved.
