There is no cure for this disease, but blood sugar can be controlled by changing lifestyle and eating habits. Diabetes patients should take special care of their diet. Diabetes patients can include ragi in their diet. It helps in controlling blood sugar level. Ragi is a gluten free food which is rich in properties like calcium, protein, carbohydrates, fiber and iron.
If you include ragi in your diet, it helps in reducing high blood pressure. To include ragi in your diet, you can make its halwa, kheer, porridge, dosa, idli and roti and eat it.
How to include Ragi in your diet
Ragi is a member of the millet family. Compared to other members, Ragi (Finger Millet) has the highest amount of calcium (344 mg%) and potassium (408 mg%). Apart from these, protein, carbohydrates, dietary fiber are also found in it. Vitamin B components like thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, iron and phosphorus are also found in it. You can consume ragi by making porridge. Mix ragi flour in water or milk. Then cook it on low flame till the porridge thickens. If you want, add honey or dates for sweetness and mix it. Ragi has a low glycemic index. It also helps in reducing cholesterol. Diabetic patients can consume 10-20 grams of ragi daily or on alternate days.
Ragi Roti
For this, you can mix ragi flour with any other gluten free flour or wheat flour thoroughly and make roti and consume it. This is a healthy option to replace the regular wheat roti.
Make Ragi Pudding
For this, first fry the ragi flour in ghee. Then you can prepare a delicious and nutritious sweet dish by adding milk, jaggery, cardamom and saffron to it and making ragi halwa or kheer. It is considered very beneficial for health.
