The holy month of Ramzan has started from 2nd March. The month of Ramzan is considered very holy for the people who follow Islam. During this time, people who follow Islam keep fast. Many diabetes patients also keep fast. However, according to the Holy Quran, it is not necessary for sick people to keep fast. If diabetes patients want to keep fast, then they can keep their blood sugar under control by taking some necessary precautions.
The duration of fasting in Ramadan depends on sunrise and sunset. During this period, nothing is eaten from the first ray of the morning till sunset. Staying without eating for a long time can affect the digestive system of the body, which can cause problems to diabetes patients. In such a situation, diabetes patients can keep fast after consulting a doctor.
What did the doctor say about fasting
Dr. Hamid Ashraf, a diabetes specialist at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of Aligarh Muslim University, explained how diabetes patients can keep Roza safely. Talking to Local 18, Dr. Hamid Ashraf of JN Medical College said, "Diabetic patients can also keep Roza, but it is important to consult a doctor so that their health is not affected."
'Proper monitoring of sugar level is necessary'
Dr. Hamid Ashraf further said, "During fasting, there can be fluctuations in sugar levels, which can lead to hypoglycemia (sudden drop in blood sugar). This can cause the patient to faint or have seizures. On the other hand, excessive increase in sugar can cause weakness, thirst, headache and blurred vision. To avoid these problems, proper monitoring of insulin and sugar levels is necessary."
It is necessary to check blood sugar before fasting
Dr. Hamid Ashraf said, "If diabetic patients are fasting during Ramadan, then it is necessary to get blood sugar checked first. There is a high risk of dehydration during fasting, especially for diabetic patients. To avoid this, it can be beneficial to take lemonade, buttermilk, coconut water, melon and fresh fruit juice with less sugar.
Type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients, especially those who take insulin, should keep checking their blood sugar at regular intervals. If the sugar level of a diabetes patient falls below 70 or above 300, he should break his fast immediately.
