The government has lifted the ban on the export of broken rice to promote its export. This ban was imposed in September 2022. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade has said in a notification, "The export policy of broken rice has been revised from 'restricted to free' with immediate effect." Exporters had appealed to the government to allow shipment due to increase in inventory.
Last year, the government had removed the minimum export price (MEP) of USD 490 per tonne on overseas shipments of non-basmati white rice and lifted the complete ban on shipment of the variety.
The food supply chain was disrupted due to the Russia-Ukraine war
These measures have been taken at a time when there is sufficient stock of rice in the country's government warehouses and retail prices are also under control. Exports were banned due to disruption in the food supply chain due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Even though exports were banned, the government allowed exports to friendly and needy countries on request.
In the year 2023-24, India exported broken rice worth $194.5 million to countries like Gambia, Benin, Senegal and Indonesia. This figure was $983.4 million in the year 2022-23 and $1.13 billion in the year 2021-22.
