Farhan Azmi News: Goa police have registered a case against Abu Farhan Azmi, son of Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA in Maharashtra Assembly Abu Azmi, for assault in a public place and disturbing peace in the state, officials said on Tuesday (March 4). Restaurateur and businessman Abu Farhan Azmi is the husband of Bollywood actress Ayesha Takia. The development comes at a time when SP MLA Abu Azmi is facing an FIR and criticism from members of the ruling alliance in Maharashtra for his remarks praising Mughal ruler Aurangzeb.

In a release, Goa Police said that their control room received a call at 11.12 pm on Monday night informing that a fight was going on at a supermarket in Candolim (North Goa district). During the fight, Abu Farhan Azmi allegedly told the rival group that he had a licensed gun, Calangute police station inspector Paresh Naik told news agency PTI.

The officer said that when the police reached the spot, it was found that there was a fight between two groups over a minor issue. Farhan Azmi's group was also involved in this. According to the police release, both the parties involved in the fight were later brought to the Calangute police station. They were given a chance to lodge a complaint, but both the parties refused to file a complaint.

The release said, "As per protocol, he was sent for medical test at the District Hospital, Mapusa. But he refused to undergo medical test." According to the police, Abu Farhan Azmi showed a valid arms license issued by the concerned authority and permit to carry arms in Goa.

According to the release, the Calangute police recorded the statements of all the accused on Tuesday morning. The statement said, "Since the persons involved were quarreling in a public place, disturbing public peace and rioting, the Calangute police station registered an FIR based on the complaint of PSI Paresh Sinari on behalf of the government."

Investigation begins against Abu Azmi

Mumbai police have started investigation into the case registered against Abu Asim Azmi over his remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Police in neighbouring Thane had on Monday registered a case against Azmi for allegedly trying to hurt religious sentiments on a complaint by Lok Sabha member Naresh Mhaske. The Thane police later transferred the FIR to Mumbai, an official said. On Tuesday, a fresh case was registered against Azmi at the Marine Drive police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Azmi, who is the Samajwadi Party's Maharashtra unit president, had said that during Aurangzeb's reign, India's borders had reached Afghanistan and Burma (Myanmar). "Our GDP (gross domestic product) was 24 per cent (of world GDP) and India was called the golden bird (during Aurangzeb's reign)," the MLA from Mumbai's Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency claimed.
